THE UNDERDOG:
A STORYTELLING UNIT

In this unit,
students will be able to re-tell
another classmate's
Underdog story;
ensuring the originator's true essence of the story is still intact, while bringing their own unique voice into the mix.
Unit Overview
Lesson #1:
Students will work together to identify what it means to tell a story,
and it's significance throughout history. ​

Language-Based Objective: Students will be able to articulate the importance of storytelling and its impact on society.

Affective-Based Objective: Students will be able to appreciate multiple cultural viewpoints and voices, in order to continue the tradition of Oral Storytelling.

Lesson #2:
Students will identify the archetypes in a Cinderella-inspired story
and will begin plotting an outline for their Underdog tale.

Language-Based Objective: Students will be able to initiate and participate in a range of group discussions to better understand other cultures and communicate effectively.

Affective-Based Objective: Students will be able to appreciate multiple cultural viewpoints and voices, in order to continue the tradition of Oral Storytelling.

Lesson #3:
Students will understand how their characters, key points,
and moral of the story can strengthen their tale.

Language-Based Objective: Students will be able to initiate and participate in a range group discussion and understand other cultures to communicate effectively.

Affective-Based Objective: Students will be able to appreciate multiple cultural viewpoints and voices, in order to continue the tradition of Oral Storytelling.

Lesson #4 & #5:
Students will incorporate movement techniques
to communicate their story verbally and physically.

Language-Based Objective: Students will be able to apply the knowledge of movement to their storytelling, in order to make effective choices for meaning.

Affective-Based Objective: Students will be able to appreciate multiple cultural viewpoints and voices, in order to continue the tradition of Oral Storytelling.

Lesson #6 & #7:
Students will self-reflect on their own speech patterns and discover new ways
to incorporate emotion into storytelling.

Language-Based Objective: Students will be able use theatre-based vocal activities to communicate effectively and participate in group discussions/exercises to unlock their full potential as a storyteller.

Lesson #8:
This feedback day with peers will allow students to sharpen their
speaking and listening skills.

Language-Based Objective: Students will be able to seek and understand other perspectives and cultures, and communicate with another partner. They will learn how to express their own ideas clearly and persuasively.

Lesson #9:
Students will engage and orient a classmate in their Underdog Story.

Lesson #10:
Students will be able to create an Underdog story, share their story,
and re-tell another classmate’s Underdog tale.

Language-Based Objective: Students will be able to adapt voice, awareness of audience, and use of language when retelling their partner’s Underdog Story by; engaging in group discussions, participating in the voice and movement exercises, and sharing the Underdog Story with another person.
